Deep Tissue Massage & Sports Massage
Aches and pains won’t stand a chance against Elite Spine sports massages!
Deep Tissue Massage & Sports Massage in Singapore
Most patients typically seek sports massage treatments to address tight muscles and sports injuries. However, a quality sports massage, or physiotherapeutic massage, is part of a larger group of treatments that fall under soft tissue therapy.
At Elite Spine Centres, the importance of holistic care is highlighted in our signature Functional Correction Method (FCM). Your individual needs will be evaluated to determine the best modalities to ace your health goals as part of your treatment plan. This usually includes but is not limited to soft tissue therapy, chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitative exercise and lifestyle advice.
That said, you don’t need to experience chronic pain or muscle tension to get a deep tissue massage! On its own, a sports massage is beneficial for releasing muscle tension, enhancing athletic performance, improving joint mobility, better blood circulation and more.
Our sports massage and deep tissue massage therapies are administered by Ms Hazel Beng and Ms Rahil Rosli (both Singaporean). They are both skilful and personable therapists trained in a variety of massage, rehab and stretch techniques, ensuring a pleasant and professional massage experience for our patients at Elite Spine.
What is a Sports Massage?
Each sports massage session targets a specific group of muscles and pressure points, usually aiming to increase blood flow and address muscle stiffness. This is in contrast to spa-style massages, which are less specific and geared towards general body relaxation.

Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, commonly abbreviated as MLD, is an advanced therapeutic method that has been proven to stimulate the lymphatic system. It is a light, rhythmic massage that uses a range of specialised movements and gentle pumping techniques. In fact, the pressure applied on the skin should be as gentle as the weight of a teaspoon of water!
These mild stretching movements stimulate the lymphatic vessels, increasing the flow of excess fluid and metabolic waste. Hence its signature benefit: reduced water retention and swelling from injuries/surgery and lymphedema.
Myofascial Release & Trigger Point Therapy
In line with FCM principles, manual pressure techniques like myofascial release (MFR) and trigger point therapy (TPT) may be provided alongside chiropractic care. If applied with precision, these specific soft tissue methods can mobilise restricted tissues and joints within a short period.
Generally, massage therapists apply these deep tissue massage techniques to target specific areas using the thumb, fingers, or elbows. Most patients describe the pain as a “good sore” when they feel the tension released within the muscle fibres and soft tissues.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) involves using specialised tools that allow our doctors to scan, find and treat scar tissue, fibrous adhesions and “knots” in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.
This form of deep tissue massage is often mistaken with traditional Chinese medicine’s Gua Sha, whereby tools are used to scrape the skin repeatedly to improve blood circulation.
The difference between the two lies in the technique. Gua Sha focuses on scaping or agitating the skin. Meanwhile, IATSM often uses cream or oil to reduce friction on the skin, instead directing the force primarily into deeper tissues. As a result, it also does not leave the types of bruises often associated with Gua Sha.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is beginning to gain popularity amongst modern physiotherapists and chiropractors, though slightly different from our counterparts in traditional Chinese medicine.
This is a unique form of soft tissue therapy since it utilises a suction (decompressive) force on the body, compared to usual sports massage or myofascial release, which involves compressing the tissues. Cupping improves blood circulation, reduces myofascial restrictions, and helps the body clear metabolic waste from cells and tissues.
Radial Shockwave Therapy
Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT) is another advanced therapeutic technique used at Elite Spine Centres. This machine delivers a controlled and rapid percussion to the tissues, penetrating certain areas more effectively than manual methods. For more information on RSWT, read here.
